Balcombe Under Siege

The sleepy village of Balcombe in West Sussex, in the middle of the Weald valley, has until recently not been a place you would associate with industrial development. The surrounding countryside is among the most picturesque you will see out of the train window on the line between London and Brighton. However, Cuadrilla Resources acquired a petroleum exploration and development licence (PEDL 244) for an area of Sussex, including Balcombe, and acquired an adjoining licence a few years later, bringing the total area of Sussex countryside they can exploit to over 270 square miles. This is the most disgraceful act ever perpetrated by any organisation against this beautiful land.

The industry’s own research shows that over time most wells will leak (over half leak in some way within 15 years). The extraction process involves the use of a cocktail of toxic chemicals in both the drilling and fracking fluids. The volumes of water used in these processes are also huge (millions of gallons per well). Flow back fluids will also leach materials out of the targeted formations, including heavy metals, toxic hydrocarbons and radioactive materials. Leaking methane, toxic water contamination, severe air pollution, chronic health effects and cancers have devastated communities in the US and Australia. People there have woken up to the threat and are getting organised.

It is with heavy hearts we play our music today. This is on our doorstep and could be on yours very soon. Stand up to be counted - we are more than them. It is our English countryside. It does not belong to these filthy interlopers, these heartless, international corporations who couldn't give a damn about our children or our children's children, just as long as they have profit.

THEY WILL POISON THE LAND AND IT'S IRREVERSABLE
PLEASE GO TO BALCOMBE TODAY AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT
UNITED WE STAND!
